Learn to Build a Wind Turbine

Six Day Workshop April 27th - May 2nd, 2009

What will you Learn? 

In this six-day hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to make a quiet, efficient and durable wind turbine from scratch.  Participants will develop knowledge and skills in basic electricity, wood working, metal working, resin casting and a host of other competencies.  The workshop as a group will complete at least one fully functional 10' wind turbine, rated at 700 Watts, and additional turbines if time permits. 

Topics Include:
  • Basic wind power theory
  • Basic wind turbine design
  • Basic alternator design
  • Shop safety
  • Welding instruction
  • Wood working instruction
  • Coil winding
  • Resin casting
  • Tower safety (depending on whether we erect the generator. Time permitting)
  • Siting a turbine

About Windhorse Farm

Windhorse Farm, on the LaHave River upstream from Bridgewater, is a 169 year-old experiment in sustainability. Well-known for demonstrating and teaching land stewardship practices, Windhorse has recently begun to focus on methods for mitigating climate change. One of its four climate stabilization programs is clean generation of electrical energy.

Facilities at Windhorse Farm include sauna, fire circles, canoes and 20 kilometres of trails through the 250 acre pristine forest.

Each night participants can lay down the tools, get together around the fire, eat delicious food, play music, and get to know eachother.


Accomodation Options:

Single or Double Occupancy Rooms in Juniper Lodge or Sunshine House for those seeking indoor accomodations - contact Windhorse to make arrangements

Group dwellings (a large traditional covered tent called a yurt, with a woodstove) (7 per tent). Participants will bring their own sleeping pad and sleeping bag. Shared bathrooms and showers.

Private camping: for those wishing to keep costs as low as possible, participants are welcome to bring their own tents at a cost of $10/day for facilities and camping space.

  • Anything you might want for social sessions in the evenings: campfire stories, musical instruments, etc. 

About the Instructor 

Hugh Piggott is a pioneer in small wind turbine design, author, and world renowned expert on wind power.  Hailing from Scoraig Scotland, a community entirely off-grid, Hugh has taught countless workshops to various lucky groups and individuals around the world, including courses in Central America, North America and Europe. What is the Cost?  

All facilities: sauna, canoes, nature walks, optional contemplative activities, tours etc. are provided, as are all meals.

Indoor option: $550 / ($650 after March 15th) for the base course fee + accomodations (30-50/night) Contact Windhorse Farm for prices.

Group dwelling option: $695 / ($795 after March 15th), for full 6-day program, room and full board.

Private camping: $610 / ($710 after March 15th) which includes full 6-day program, all meals, and facilities fees.

$50 price reduction for referrals.  Limited work-study options available.
